Puppies Grateful for Rescue! February 25, 2008

In the year 2000, 8 million healthy dogs and cats were euthanized in so called “shelters” across America. By the year 2007 that number had dropped to a still unthinkable 5 million. What is behind this positive, downward trend?

Thousands of organization large and small, some only one or two people, have been working together across the country to attain one goal, stop the killing of homeless pets and reduce the pet over population problem.
Such an organization is the Menifee Animal Shelter in Frenchurg, Kentucky.

Sadly puppies and kittens still go into shelters weekly and are killed weekly because there are just too many. A Menifee volunteer, Susan, receives a call every week from a local pound telling her how many will be killed on Friday. She takes as many as she possibly can. This last Friday was no different.

The Menifee Animal Shelter looks to other shelters for help to rescuing these death row animals. Volunteers pack up the cargo van weekly and drive up to 20 hours one way to give these animals a chance. The Rozzie May Animal Alliance received a call from Kentucky, desperate for help for five nine-week puppies. Since it was on very short notice, and the RMAA has no facility of its own at this time, they immediately contacted the Lakes Region Humane Society (LRHS) in Ossipee to see if the shelter could take five orphans. The LRHS responded that they would be thrilled to help these animals.

So the puppies journey began. Jeff Wiles left Frenchurg, Kentucky at 7:00 P.M. Thursday night driving a van full of 30 anxious dogs with five extra puppies squeezed in at the very last minute, all headed north for a chance at life. Hours later, Maxine Cheek and Roz Manwaring of the RMAA headed south from Conway Friday morning to meet the van.

The weather was terrible that day with the van from Kentucky held up by accidents on
the highway and the RMAA team seeing 7 accidents along their route as they worked their way through snow, freezing rain, and rain. Both vehicles kept moving towards each other, as the planned four hour-trip for the RMAA turned into eight hours. The exchange was finally made in Westford, Mass.

Original plans to meet Sarah at the Lakes Region Humane Society kept changing. Constant communication by cell phone allowed everyone to understand the dilemma.
Sarah returned to the shelter at 6:30 PM. to receive the tired, but excited puppies. The five adorable pups were safely settled in for their first night in New Hampshire, at 7:00 P.M.; 24 hours after their journey began in Kentucky. These pups are available for adoption, for information please call LRHS - 539-1077.

The Rozzie May Animal Alliance is just one of the many organizations working together with shelters and humane societies to end the killing of homeless pets in America. Their goals are to offer low cost spay neuter services to lower the numbers of homeless animals in New Hampshire and to continue saving lives by providing transport, shelter and a forever home for any animal in need. www.rozziemay.rog.
